Departing from the Golfito Pier, you will enjoy a brief yet picturesque drive along the coast to the National Wildlife Refuge of Golfito, which surrounds the town of Golfito. Originally created to protect the area’s water supply, the refuge provides a spectacular setting for indigenous plants and animals to flourish. The refuge is covered with forests of towering trees such as silk cotton, butternut and copal that offer a pristine habitat for countless creatures, especially birds.

The large multi-coloured bills of the toucan may seem unwieldy, yet they’re surprising light and enable the birds to eat fleshy fruits and probe tree trunks in search of insects. Other favourite local species include scarlet macaws, golden-naped woodpeckers, and plant life like papayas, heliconias and a staggering variety of orchids. The refuge is truly a wonderland of species undisturbed by human intervention. You may also spot monkeys playfully swinging among the trees.

Right after this relaxing walk adventure and prior to our return to the ship, enjoy a tropical fruit snack and bottled water to replenish your energy.
