Norwegian Expedition Voyages

Explore the Arctic like a Norwegian with new expedition style coastal voyages

Hurtigruten has revamped its coastal product to include new expedition style voyages and a la carte dining, as well as a number of new excursions & private transfer options for 2016. Book before 31 July 2015 and get £160 per person to spend on-board.

A more adventurous way to sample Norway’s rugged coastline

Norwegians live a very active, outdoor lifestyle and have a real sense of adventure. Those who want a truly authentic journey along Norway’s rugged coastline can now join new expedition style voyages along the traditional coastal route.

From 1 January 2016, three of Hurtigruten’s coastal ships (the MS Nordnorge, MS Nordkapp and MS Nordlys) will operate along the same coastal route as their sister ships, but will be dedicated to a new concept, combining the best elements of the existing coastal and explorer programmes.

All three ships will offer all the activities and services you would expect on a Hurtigruten voyage but with an expedition team on-board, who will be offering a series of hikes in selected ports as well as daily lectures about flora and fauna, fishing traditions, polar & viking history as well as geology, glaciology and climate.

Prices for the three ships will be the same as for the rest of the coastal fleet, with the lectures included. A hiking pass will cost extra and payable locally.

New excursions & pre/post tours

In addition to the hikes being offered on the explorer style voyages, there are three new additional hiking excursions offered on all ships including a ‘Mountain hike with husky’ in Kirkenes (£80), ‘Hiking Mount Fløien’ (£40) and ‘Mountain hike in the Lofoten Islands’ (£61).

Wannabe Arctic explorers can now extend their trip with a Sami reindeer sleighing trip including an overnight stay in the traditional Sami Lavvo (tent) near Tromso (£308).

Alternatively, those embarking or disembarking in Tromso can also book a full day tour of Sommarøy Island for £226 per person.

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Røros can be enjoyed on a detour from Trondheim to Oslo. This colourful and charming town is made up of authentic wooden buildings with quaint little shops and an active arts and crafts scene. The trip including travel and 2 nights on bed and breakfast basis costs £279 per person.

Sample local specialities with a new a la carte dining option

For those who want to spoil themselves while on-board, a new a la carte dining option has been implemented on nine of the coastal ships. Most voyages are based on half or full-board, but for a small supplement, guests can upgrade to a more intimate dining area and a la carte menu.
With locally sourced ingredients like cod, scallops, crayfish & langoustine, reindeer, tender sirloin of beef and cloudberries, the menus will change with the season and there will be options to suit every taste. The a la carte option is only bookable on-board with supplements from approximately £16. It is not currently available on MS Lofoten or MS Vesterålen.

Clearer cabin choices

Hurtigruten has changed it cabin categorisation system, making it simpler for guests to choose accommodation that suits their needs.

Guests booking a suite will also now get wine included with dinner and private transfers (Bergen only) as well as an upgraded amenity kit. Those booking a superior cabin can also arrange private transfers, but at an additional cost.

The new programme not only includes winter trips to search for the Northern Lights, but year-round departures, including spectacular trips along the coast, under the Midnight sun.

Classic Voyage North from Bergen to Kirkenes, departing on MS Kong Harald on 21 November 2016 costs from £689 per person on full board basis. Flights cost from an additional £395 per person.

Bookings made by 31 July 2015 will receive up to £160 per person on-board credit, to spend during their voyage.
