Northern Lights and polar bears
Please note this voyage is SOLD OUT! Cruise and explore the high north of Spitsbergen, North Cape and the hidden pearls of coastal Norway
This is an expedition where the elements rule, and the weather, wind and ice conditions will determine our schedule. Safety is paramount and the captain will decide the final sailing itinerary during the voyage. Hence, this itinerary is just an indication of what you can experience, and why every expedition with Hurtigruten is unique. Departure date: 21 Sept 2016 (SOLD OUT)
After your flight from Oslo you can enjoy an overnight stay at one of our hotels in the "capital" of Spitsbergen.
Explore Longyearbyen the next morning on your own, before embarking the MS Fram to start your Expedition voyage.
Enjoy the views to unique arctic wilderness, glaciers and majestic mountains in the Kongsfjord, the largest fjord on the north-west coast of Spitsbergen. We might also cruise into a large adjacent fjord called Krossfjorden. Here the landscape varies from large tundra plains to alpine peaks with dramatic glaciers bouncing into the ocean. Look out for the mountain called Mitra – aptly named after the hat of catholic bishops. You will see it on the northern shores of the entrance to Kongsfjorden. At the end of the fjord you see the majestic Kongsbreen (Kings Glacier) with the three characteristic nunataks: Nora, Dana and Svea – named after the three Scandinavian countries. In Magdalenefjorden there is a significant cultural heritage; a whaling station from the 16th century, including a graveyard for whalers that died during the first “oil adventure”.
The relatively small fjord in South Spitsbergen National Park used to be a stronghold for the trappers hunting for polar bears. The landscape of Hornsund is largely alpine with the majestic Hornsundtinden soaring highest of all.
Bjørnøya is the southernmost of the Svalbard group of islands, situated in the Arctic Ocean between the Norwegian mainland and Spitsbergen. This 178 square kilometres island has a fascinating history and geology and an abundant bird life. The nine people living here form a crew appointed and sent to the island by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.
Over the past centuries, adventurers, royalty and expeditions have set the North Cape plateau as their goal. Standing at the far edge of mainland Europe, overlooking steep cliffs and watching the eternal horizon is a feeling out of the ordinary. Next to North Cape you find Skarsvåg, said to be the world’s northernmost fishing village. Enjoy our excursion to the North Cape, or alternatively a guided walk in Skarsvåg. Around lunchtime we sail out to enjoy the spectacular view of the cape from the seaside.
The arctic paradise Sommarøy is an archipelago of small islands with white, sandy beaches and a lively fishing village. Sommarøy has a couple of small shops where you can buy handicrafts and groceries. Inside one of the local shops you find “Kaillkråa” (the gentlemen’s corner) where husbands usually are parked while the women do their shopping. As shopping might be a time consuming activity the men have private hooks on the wall for their cups. Join a variety of excursions like hikes and kayaking, or take the opportunity to visit Tromsø – the Gateway to the Arctic.
We sail through the narrow Raftsund and navigate into the even narrower Trollfjord, where nearly vertical mountain walls rise right out of the sea. Then we spend the day in Lofoten to explore this spectacular area, known for excellent fishing, extreme nature and picturesque fishing villages.
Crossing the Arctic Circle is an event, an event we will make even bigger by visiting the island Vikingen where a statue of the Arctic Circle symbol is situated. Get ready for some fun and a visit by Neptune. Sailing further south we will visit Træna. We plan to take a closer look at the famous “Torghatten” with a hike up to the mountain.
The island of Frøya is located off the coast of Trøndelag, and is surrounded by more than 5 400 islets and reefs, making up an amazing archipelago. The landscape is hilly yet relatively flat, with the highest point reaching only 74 metres.
On Frøya we offer a variety of excursions like rafting, hiking or a visit to a salmon farm. You may also spend the day by yourself, exploring this charming settlement.
We will sail deep into Sunnfjord to reach the settlement of Bygstad. Come ashore to explore a fjord renowned for its waterfalls, join a mountain hike or discover the area on your own.
We call at port in Bergen during the morning hours, where our voyage ends. We recommend a stay in Bergen to explore this international city with small-town charm. Stroll through the picturesque streets and enjoy visiting well-known and famous sites like Håkon’s Hall and the Rosenkrantz Tower, St. Mary’s Church, Bergen Harbour, the famous fish market and the UNESCO World Heritage famous houses of “Bryggen” (the wharf).
