Kirkenes
Kirkenes – gateway to the east
Kirkenes, located northeast in Northern Norway about 400 km north of the Arctic Circle, is known as the capital of the Barents Region. Just 15 km far from the Russian border, 10% of the people in Kirkenes (Киркенес) are Russians. Kirkenes is also the turning point of Hurtigruten.
This is a place of great contrasts; from the indigenous traditional way of living to a modern industrial society all in one generation. History buffs will rejoice! See remnants from the Russian Revolution, learn about the Winter-war between Russia and Finland, the total destruction during World War 2 and of 30 years of cold political war. As a visitor, you will feel the strange pulse. Get a taste of the history of Europe.
