Planned itinerary Post-programme

Day 1: Guayaquil-Lima

After disembarkation in Guayaquil, enjoy a sightseeing tour including lunch. Late afternoon transfer to the airport and flight to Lima.

Welcome to Peru! Lima, Peru’s capital, was founded in 1535 by Spanish Conquistador Francisco Pizarro and quickly became known as the City of Kings. The city has decaying colonial splendour and the teeming vitality of an oriental bazaar.

Overnight, including breakfast at Country Club Lima Hotel or similar.

Day 2: Lima/Cusco/Sacred Valley

After breakfast, transfer to Lima Airport and fly to Cusco.  Upon arrival in Cusco, meet the local representative and transfer to a local restaurant for lunch.

Next, proceed to the Sacsayhuaman fortress.  Sacsayhuaman is strategically located on a hill overlooking Cusco and was constructed without mortar, like many other Inca structures. The enormous stones (some weighing 200 tons) fit so tightly that not even a thin blade of grass can slide between them. The craftsmanship is a stunning example of the Inca’s sophisticated construction techniques and architectural skills.  Continue to the Tambo del Inka Resort & Spa or similar in the Sacred Valley for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Sacred Valley/Machu Picchu/Sacred Valley

This morning after breakfast, transfer to Ollantaytambo.  This Incan settlement shares its name with the formidable stone structure that climbs the massive cliff looming over the town.  The fortress was the valley’s main defence against the Antis and was the site of the Incas’ greatest victory against the Spanish during the wars of conquest.  Constructed of rose-coloured granite, this huge installation was once a thriving complex of baths, temples and military barracks.

Next, head to the nearby train station to board the deluxe Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu.  A savoury brunch will be served as we enjoy the spectacular views outside. An early afternoon arrival gives us time to begin our explorations of Machu Picchu, the breathtaking Incan citadel, just as everyone else is breaking for lunch.

Overlooking the raging Urubamba River and discovered in a hidden tangle of vines and trees atop the mountain, the city of Machu Picchu will forever hold the secret of its rise and fall – the Incas left no written record. Accompanied by our guide, we explore the city's ruins and feel its pulse as we visualise the lives of the priests, craftsmen, and servants who inhabited this incredible place. Excavations at the site have revealed skeletons, artefacts and wool clothing, but no gold.  The same precision of assembled stones exists here as in other Incan sites.

After an afternoon exploring the ruins, enjoy tea-time at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge before taking the bus back down to Aguas Calientes.  Here, board the Vistadome train back to Ollantaytambo. Transfer to the Tambo del Inka Resort & Spa for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Cusco/Lima

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before transferring to Cusco, once the centre of the Inca Empire.  Visit the Koricancha temple, where we admire the lovely Dominican Convent of Santo Domingo that was built on the foundations of the Temple of the Sun, the most important temple in the Inca Empire. The curved, mortar-less masonry wall at the west end of the church is considered to be one of the greatest existing examples of Inca stonework.

Continue to splendid Baroque-style Cusco Cathedral, built in the mid-1500s on the foundations of an Inca palace. Many of the stones used in its construction were looted from the nearby Sacsayhuaman fortress.

Transfer to the airport with a box lunch and fly to Lima.

Upon return from Cusco, a representative from our local agency will assist with international flight connections for guests who wish to fly home same day. Flight departures to home destinations will not be before 18:30.

Please note that due to changing conditions, the order of sights may vary.
