Safer together

Your safety is our highest priority. We’ve introduced strict measures on all our ships, designed to reduce the spread of COVID-19. We’ll be constantly updating these measures according to the latest guidelines from the local authorities. You’ll need to agree to follow any current travel restrictions at the time you are sailing.

We’re proud to announce that Professor of Medical Microbiology, Ørjan Olsvik has joined our company as an advisor. He’ll help us operate in the safest way possible. He has more than 10 years of international experience in infection control.

We’ll make sure that all necessary safety measures are put in place, and will continually adjust them as the situation changes. You can rest assured that we will provide the safest sailing possible so that you can enjoy your time with us. Welcome aboard!

Pre-boarding and embarkation

To reduce the risk of COVID-19, we conduct health screening for everyone boarding our ships.

  • Prior to departure, you’ll need to fill in a self-declaration form that confirms that you don’t have any COVID-19 symptoms. Please look out for an email with this self-declaration form 24 hours before your departure. We may have to exercise our right to refuse your embarkation if parts of the form are missing or incomplete.
  • You’ll also need to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result that is no older than 72 hours.
  • You’ll need to provide a Health declaration form. Please familiarise yourself with the required travel documents here.
  • As you board the ship, you’ll go through a contactless temperature scanner. You may also be asked to take a COVID-19 test, conducted by our medical staff. At embarkation, we ask all guests to wear a face mask and maintain a distance of one metre from other guests and crew.

Testing of crew and practices

Our crew are trained on all of our COVID-19 procedures. In addition, we ask each crew member to follow a number of stringent protocols at embarkation and during our cruises.

  • Before embarking the ship, all crew members must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test, performed within the last 72 hours.
  • They must also fill in a self-declaration form, stating that they have no symptoms of COVID-19 and have had no contact with anyone who has tested positive in the last 14 days.
  • Crew members who have travelled to board the ship from a different country, will be quarantined and tested before being allowed to embark.
  • Daily temperature checks are conducted on all crew members.

We have always followed the highest standards when it comes to cleaning our ships. We have enhanced our standard practices with additional cleaning protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19, using technology that is based on the latest medical and scientific advice.

  • In addition to thorough daily cleaning, all cabins are fully disinfected before you check-in.
  • We do a full disinfection of the public areas of the entire ship every day, including fogging of the ship’s restaurants and public decks.
  • Cabins and public areas are disinfected using UV light and electrostatic spraying of Drysan Oxy from Ecolab. This sanitizer is certified by The German Society for the Prevention of Virus Diseases (DVV) and is proven to eliminate COVID-19.

The ventilation systems in our ships do not regenerate air, preventing virus spread between cabins.

Social distancing

We have put down floor markings, increased in-cabin services, and adjusted how we operate so as to provide more space for you when on board.

  • We’ve added floor markings throughout our ships to help our passengers keep a safe distance from each other.
  • Our relatively small ships are operating with a reduced number of guests.
  • We’ve reduced the seating capacity in our restaurants, and you’ll need to make a reservation to dine in them. Alternatively, you can take advantage of our takeaway service and eat in the comfort of your own cabin.
  • We’ve also introduced a booking system for the sauna, the gym, the outdoor hot tubs, as well as the pool, where applicable. This helps to maintain social distance and avoid long waiting times, as well as giving us enough time to thoroughly sanitize these areas in between use.
  • We’ve increased the number of lectures in the lecture hall and reduced the number of attendees per lecture. We offer live streaming of our lectures from the Lecture Hall, Science Center, and our on-deck activities, so you can book your preferred time slot and attend in person, or enjoy the lecture streamed directly to your cabin.

Face mask policy

Face masks will be required for guests and crew in some situations during your cruise.

  • Our crew wear face masks or face shields in all public areas, when preparing meals in the galleys, and when cleaning your cabin.
  • Guests will need to wear face masks during embarkation and disembarkation, in hallways, stairways, lecture halls, and in the Science Center. In any other places that don’t allow for proper social distancing, use of a facial covering will be required.

Food and drink

Enjoying the delicious food on board is a big part of your experience sailing with us. To reduce the risk of COVID-19, we’ve reorganized our restaurants and services.

  • We offer more seating sessions for every meal, so we’re able to maintain the recommended distance between tables.
  • We serve individual dishes instead of self-service buffets. If you’d like to eat in, you’ll need to book a table in advance through our reservation system.
  • We ask you to arrive for your meal at the agreed time to minimize queuing, and use the floor markings to keep a safe distance from other guests.
  • At the restaurant entrance, you can expect a temperature check with a contactless scanner, and you’ll also be required to use the hand sanitiser placed by the entrance before you enter the restaurant.
  • All purchases are made using your touch-free cruise card to limit touch points.
  • Our kitchens follow the highest standards of hygiene and quality. Touch points, such as counters and doors, are frequently cleaned and disinfected.
  • If you prefer to eat in the privacy of your cabin, we offer takeaway for all meals. All menus are available through your smartphone, and you can then pick up your order in the restaurants. This service is available every day from 0700 to 2200.

Expedition Landings

When you’re on a nature landing, you’ll be able to walk freely within an area designated by your Expedition Team. You may remove your face mask as soon as you’re able to keep a safe distance from fellow passengers.

Landings in settlements where people live are conducted in close cooperation with the local authorities.

  • You’ll be guided by our experienced Expedition Team and to ensure both your safety and that of the locals, you’ll need to stay in your designated group and wear a face mask at all times during your visit.
  • No individual shopping or visits to coffee shops or restaurants will be possible.
  • Face masks are also required when you are in the common areas of the ship and while in the tender boats.
  • All pontoons, railings, tender boats and gear will be disinfected between each group.
  • All personal tech equipment for activities is also washed and carefully disinfected after use.

We follow the strictest protocol to keep you safe. We’ll follow official guidelines and will adjust our policy to comply with the rules given by the local government where we visit.

Medical team on board

Every ship has a dedicated Health & Safety Officer and medical team on board. The team is at your service any time of the day when you are travelling with us.

Our expedition ships are equipped with a small hospital on board, and we always have a doctor and at least one assistant nurse as part of the crew.

Symptoms on board

If you develop symptoms of COVID-19 during your cruise, please self-isolate in your cabin and alert us straight away by calling the reception. Our medical team will come to your cabin to conduct a rapid COVID-19 test.

If the test result is positive, we’ll immediately carry out tracking and testing protocols, cooperating fully with local authorities. To prevent the virus from spreading to others, you’ll need to self-isolate in your cabin, and we’ll continue to do our best to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Fever scan

You have more questions?

Rapid COVID-19 tests are available on all our ships.

Facilities on board

You’ll be glad to know that all treatments are still available. We ask those with appointments to arrive five minutes before their treatment to avoid crowding. Showers and changing rooms will be locked, but you’ll be able to change in the treatment room instead.

The gym is open. Hot tub, pool and sauna are closed.

To keep you and other guests safe, we’ll be limiting use of these facilities. Guests will need to book time slots in advance to allow us to disinfect and clean in between each use.

Restaurants / meal offers

We’re extending our opening hours and introducing all-day dining. A reservation system will also help us regulate the number of guests per seating. This all means you’ll be able to social distance, enjoy delicious food, and still receive a high standard of service from us. We don’t anticipate a long wait for our guests.

Excursions and going ashore

We follow all requirements from local governments and communities when exploring on land, and adjust our plans and procedures as needed. In some cases, this may mean some activities are restricted.

As we restart expedition operations, all groups visiting communities ashore will be guided. This means that independent exploration, for example shopping and visits to restaurants or cafés, is not allowed. On landings in the wilderness, guests may walk freely within an agreed area designated by the Expedition Team.

No. At this time, visitors aren’t allowed on board
