This tour begins when you board your deluxe coach at the pier for a drive to Oviedo, the capital of Principado of Asturias. It is the most cultural and historic city in the region. Our first stop will be at San Julian de los Prados Church. It was made in the preromantic style and was built in the 9th century to honour the martyred Egyptian San Julian and Basilissa. The pictorial decoration is without doubt the most important of its time, in its extent and conservation, as much as in the variety of icons represented, in all of Western Europe. The church is now a UNESCO Word Heritage Site.
An impressive building with a tall spire that dominates the old town
The trip continues to Cathedral of San Salvador of Oviedo. The cathedral displays an array of architectural styles, from Pre-Romanesque to Baroque, including Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance parts. It began as a large Pre-Romanesque basilica in the present location of the Gothic cathedral. Nothing more is known about that first building except that it was built by order of King Alfonso II of Asturias. In the cathedral we also visit the holy chamber that was built to house the jewels and the relics of the San Salvador’s cathedral and to keep the different treasures associated with the kingdom of Asturias. After the visit in the cathedral we continue to the old town where you will see a lot of sculptures, and some interesting squares. Then there will be some free time to explore on your own or go shopping before we return to the ship.
