The World Heritage-listed historic centre of São Luís is a treasure box for lovers of history and architecture, as well as for virtually everyone else.
We first visit a handicraft market before starting the approximately 2.5 km guided walk through São Luís´ historic centre. The tour provides a closer look at the many different building styles of the houses, where upper floors were and are still used as the living quarters and the ground floors for trade.
We also see traditional one-story residential houses consisting simply of a door, window, living room, bedroom and balcony or dining room.
We also observe “solar' houses”, which generally entail a high basement and served exclusively as residences. They are often more elegant with large courtyards on the ground level.
Another house style that must be included is the belvedere, sung about by poets as the classic home of São Luís City. The belvederes are known for their natural form of ventilation and were historically said to serve as communication points between merchants and representative of ships visiting São Luís.
