A private vehicle transfers us to the village of Santa Rosa, where we start our hike to the Temple of the Sun. This excursion provides a different, more intimate perspective on local life as we pass by the gardens, small farms and homes of local people and encounter daily life as it has been for generations.
We stop near the Temple of the Sun for photos and continue on to the Temple of the Moon, which was left largely untouched by the Spaniards and reveals more information about Peru’s ancient past. Its adobe walls feature fascinating murals painted in black, bright red, sky blue, white and yellow. A hint of the temple’s original beauty can be seen inside the huaca, or “ancient place,” where the sun, wind and rain have not eroded the decorative paintings.
We then return to the ship by a private vehicle that waits outside the Moon Temple.
