Our tour starts with a 40-minute drive to the Huaca Dragon, a fascinating archaeological treasure of the Chimu people whose civilization thrived before the Incas. The mud pyramid is one of the oldest and best preserved in the Moche Valley and features beautiful friezes.
We then continue to the excavated city of Chan Chan, dating back to 850 AD. Chan Chan is the world’s largest adobe city and was the capital of the Chimu kingdom. The Chimu civilization and Chan Chan reached their peak in the 15th century but not long after fell to Inca conquerors. With its impressive size and archaeological features, the site is comparable in significance to the ancient cities of Egypt, India and China.
During our almost 90-minute visit, you develop an appreciation for why the ruins are deemed so invaluable. Discover intricate construction on the city´s palaces, temples, squares, gardens and aqueducts. You also see the remnants of extraordinary ornamentation, including carvings and stylized animal drawings. No wonder Chan Chan is a UNESCO Archaeological World Heritage Site.
Afterwards we visit Trujillo where we encounter colourful buildings, the statue in the central square called Plaza de Armas, the city´s beautiful cathedral and many of the well-preserved colonial mansions surrounding the plaza.
