Svartisen is Norway’s second largest glacier. Glaciers are made from fallen snow that, over thousands of years, compresses into large, thickened ice masses. What makes glaciers unique is their ability to move. Svartisen glacier has 60 glacier tongues and covers a full 370 kilometres². With its lowest part at just 20 metres above sea level, it is also the lowest glacier in mainland Europe.
In the realm of the sea eagle
The first part of this excursion is a boat trip in majestic surroundings. Enjoy sailing between islets and skerries while the guide tells you all about the area and the scenery – an impressive view best enjoyed out on the deck. Don’t forget your camera as you are now in the realm of the sea eagle, Europe’s largest predatory bird.
Arriving at the Svartisen Tourist Centre, you can admire the beauty of this enigmatic ice world while enjoying a warm drink and the centre’s varied buffet of delicious cakes. Afterwards, you continue the journey along the beautiful coast of Helgeland, back to Bodø where you re-join the Hurtigruten ship.
