Osen farm combines an exceptional river and a truly magnificent fishing lodge. It looks out over the head of a classic Norwegian fjord and is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. Rivers and houses of this quality are rare. The Osen river, which runs through the estate, is known for having some of Norway’s best salmon fishing.

A guided tour of the estate with the owners

When we arrive, we will meet the owners, who will be our guides for the day. They will show us around and tell us about the farm, the history and the salmon. The farm is set at the head of the fjord and within earshot of one of Norway’s most glorious waterfalls.

A highlight of the farm is its seven-bedroom rectory dating from the 1820s. The rectory has been used as a fishing lodge for the last 150 years and if the house were not privately owned it would be a museum. It is one of Norway’s best-preserved parsonages and has an eclectic mixture of classic Norwegian features and some period English furniture dating back to the time when an Irish family owned the house in the 1850s. Over the years, the owners and guests here have included nobility and ambassadors.

The house is listed by the Norwegian authorities for its historic importance. The preservation order placed on the building limits what can be done to modernise it. While the house has running water (and showers with hot water!), in many other respects it has retained all its original characteristics. The building is a reflection of the true vitality and wealth of the great Viking trading nation that is Norway, and the owners are truly proud to show us around in the house and on the estate.
