This is a nature experience for both beginners and experienced riders. You’ll be picked up at the port in Svolvær and taken to meet your horse at the Hov Horse Farm in Gimsøy. Hov is one of the oldest places in Lofoten, and rich in historical finds. Your guide will point out old landing places for boats, a heathen temple, and Viking Age graves, all etched into the landscape. Quite fitting, the Icelandic horse descends from the horses of Viking Age Norway and are well known for their good temper.
Discover Lofoten’s stunning nature and history from horseback
Once here, it’s time to saddle up. Enjoy the wonder of a sunset trot through the powdery white sand and over hillsides. This is a wonderful way to experience the Lofoten Islands and see an ancient cultural landscape with fascinating geology close up. You ride past remnants from the Viking Age, on ridges with open views towards Gimsøy, by racks of stockfish and out to the small and pleasant fishing harbour of Hovsund. During Autumn we might see the Northern Lights across the clear sky.
The pace is adjusted to your experience. The group might be divided into fast pace riders and those who prefer the gentle ambling gait, depending on the group. The tour is suitable for families and groups who wish to have a great experience together. After dismounting and stretching your legs, you’re taken to Stamsund, where your Hurtigruten ship is waiting for you.
