Kirkenes Snow Hotel is set in idyllic surroundings near Gabba Reindeer Park. Snow is a very good insulator, so when it is minus thirty degrees outside, the interior at the Snow Hotel remains at a stable minus four degrees.
A fresh experience
Your ice adventure starts with a stroll up to the hotel, where you find Norway’s largest ice bar. More than 15 tonnes of ice is used in constructing the bar and sculptures. All the ice comes from a frozen lake close to the Snow Hotel. Artists cut the ice with chainsaws and pull it with snowmobiles into the hotel. In the middle of winter this ice is 70 centimetres thick. The ice bar and the sculptures are designed differently every year. After admiring the bar, you get an ice-cold crowberry shot, locally known as ”Rudolf’s Revenge”!
There will then be a guided tour of the Snow Hotel. Every room is like a small treasure, all equipped with everything needed for a comfortable night. Each room is decorated with sculptures made from ice and snow, with different themes from Arctic culture or nature. The lighted ice sculptures create a cosy and special atmosphere. You also get an opportunity to meet the reindeers and huskies that live close by. This is an excellent photo opportunity so don’t forget to bring your camera!
“Pølse i lompe” – as Norwegian as it gets
After this cool experience it’s time for a warm snack in the Gabba restaurant. You will be served sausages with potato pancakes and mustard - a meal that is very common in Norway. On the way back to Kirkenes there will be a short stop at Prestfjellet Mountain to enjoy the magnificent views.
