Today´s excursion departs the town of Sandnessjøen by boat to visit the impressive Petter Dass Museum at Alstahaug, dedicated to the life of Petter Dass (1647-1707), a Lutheran vicar and the foremost Norwegian poet of his generation. Designed by revered architectural firm Snøhetta, known for designing the Oslo Opera House, the Dass museum´s modern horizontal lines naturally integrate with the surrounding landscape and provide an intriguing contrast with the adjacent medieval Atstahaug church and vicarage. Old and new together artfully express an understanding of the past, belief in the future and inspiration for the present.
The museum consists of several buildings, the oldest being the 800-year old church and vicarage from the mid-1700s. There are continuous exhibitions at the museum. After our visit, we re-board the boat and head south through myriad of islands to Brønnøysund, where we rejoin the Hurtigruten ship. The light, the mountains and the sea combine with the history, culture and architecture to make this a breathtaking and unforgettable experience.
