Eiríkur the troublemaker
In Haukadalur Valley are the ancient ruins of Eiríksstaðir. The Icelandic Sagas mention Eiríksstaðir as the home of Eiríkur Rauði (Eric the Red) and it is believed that the ruins are of his former residence.
Eiríkur is one of the notorious troublemakers appearing in the Icelandic sagas. His transgressions led him to flee Icelandic and take up residence in Greenland. His son, Leifur Heppni (Leif the Lucky), won his fame by travelling to America – 500 years before the arrival of Columbus.
Today history comes alive in the museum and replica of the old farm. Our story-telling guide, dressed in Viking attire, expertly brings the period to life as he guides us around the museum and tells us stories by the hearth inside the farm.
During the tour we will make a stop by the mountain ‘Helgafell’ which is believed to have magical powers.
