The Legend of the Troll

No doubt you have already heard quite a few stories about the formidable Trolls that reside in the mountain sides around Iceland.  Have you ever wondered how it might feel to follow in the giant footsteps of such a Troll?

Local legend tells of a huge Troll that went for a stroll in the fjord and sat down to take a rest on the top of big mountain high above town. The Troll was so heavy that as it sat down, it squashed part of the mountain side beneath it, leaving behind a visible indentation which has since become a very popular hiking route for guests and locals alike.

Reaching the Naustahvilft glacier

Naustahvilft, your destination, is really a bowl-like-glacier-made indentation in the mountainside. The correct geological term is in fact “Mountain Cirque”. The hike is not very long (ascending 225m), but it is rather steep. There is no designated path to follow, but the terrain is excellent for hiking and offers a good mixture of grass, soil and sheep paths.

Enjoy wonderful views over the town of Isafjordur, the picturesque fjord surroundings and your ship – weather permitting, this hike will give you one of the localities best photographic options available.
