This hike starts with the expedition members first leading you through the small village of Qeqertarsuaq. As we reach the city limits there will be magnificent views of large icebergs at the nearby beach and then we climb over an ancient lava stream to follow the picturesque ragged coast. If you are lucky and have binoculars, you might also spot some whales in the distance. Continue far along the unbelievable coastline towards Kuannit. By midsummer, the angelica overwhelms Qeqertarsuaq and beckons you to follow the island’s many hiking trails. Gather leaves for an aromatic tea made with the cleanest water straight from the waterfall outside of town. Drinking local angelica tea while admiring the lifelike shapes of volcanic rocks is an experience one can only have in Qeqertarsuaq.
Lava sculptures and unparalleled views
Then we come to place locally known as the place where basalt columns show their great exposure. Explore how the lava gushed up millions of years ago, and through rapid cooling contracted and cracked into awesome lava sculptures. The vegetation is surprisingly lush due to hidden warm springs. The combination of the bizarre rocks, the deep green of the plants and the icebergs below is fantastic. Before we turn back there will be a little snack in a lovely spot.
