A short drive will take you to the starting point of the trail just behind the Pico Castelo and near the Pico do Facho. The first part of the walk is along the Moledo, a loop trail that follows the Pico do Facho, the highest peak on the island at 517 metres. Along this straight path you will be rewarded with a panoramic, 360-degree view of the island.
Then we take the trail Pico Castelo, zig-zagging up to the top of this peak of 438 meters, the fourth-highest on the island. A reconstruction of a small fort that was built in the seventeenth century to protect the population from pirate attacks, can be seen.
This peak provides an excellent view over the southern part of the island. Flora along this route includes pines introduced here at the beginning of the twentieth century.
