In this land of hydrangeas and hot springs, of green silence and cliff-side contemplation, it is easy to believe the legend that the nine islands of the Azores are all that remain of the lost continent of Atlantis.
Board a motor coach for a panoramic drive that takes you to the belvedere (viewpoint) at Espalamaca for views of the port and the charming town of Horta. Be sure to bring a jacket - visitors are often reminded by nature that, in the Azores, they might experience "four seasons in one day."
The road ascends 915 m to the vast volcanic crater in the center of the island. This caldera is about 2 km in diameter and 450 meters deep, surrounded by some of the most luxuriant vegetation imaginable.
Continuing westward, you'll pass the typical Azorean villages of Ribeira Funda, Praia do Norte, and Norte Pequeno, and catch a magnificent view of Capelinhos, the volcano that rose from the sea in 1957, before returning to your ship.
