Imagine sleeping under the Antarctic sky with little but the thin wall of your tent protecting you from the elements. As an addition to our regular excursion programme we sometimes offer spending a night on shore in a tent when we visit Antarctica. This is a lifetime opportunity, making you feel like a true explorer. Although the likes of Amundsen, Scott and Nordenskjold had different equipment in their days, they went for the best. So do we; offering top of the line camping equipment fit to meet Antarctic standards camping on snow.
The experience starts with a pre-camp briefing by our experienced expedition staff that will accompany you during this experience. We all help pitch the tents after dinner and afterwards, you can either go to bed or sit outside the camp and take in the view or listen to the penguins from a distance. If the weather permits we might take a short walk to view points in the area and visit the penguin colonies in the bright Antarctic night. If you want to, wake up during the early morning hours to see the sunrise then we take down the camp. As an IAATO member Hurtigruten follows all guidelines associated with overnight stays ashore, leaving nothing behind and removing all traces as much as possible to protect wildlife and the general fragile environment in the region. The Polarcirkel boats pick us up and we go back to the ship for a special breakfast on board after this unique experience.
