Join us on a photography expedition on 23 February or 2 March 2019 for a very special Spitsbergen experience. You will be accompanied by Founder of the Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) awards, Chris Coe.

Located halfway between Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard is a group of islands located between, the Arctic, Barents, Greenland and Norwegian seas. Spitsbergen is the largest of the Svalbard islands.

Spitsbergen's remote location, combined with stunning pristine landscapes as far as the eye can see, bestows its visitors with a distinct spirit of the pioneers. It's one of the rare places left on earth where few people have trodden, and where polar bears outnumber humans. Nearly two-thirds of Svalbard's land surface is protected as nature reserves, national parks and bird sanctuaries, home to the likes of Arctic foxes and roaming reindeer.

The season for photogenic lights

Winter is the dreamy domain of the mesmerising Northern Lights. During this period, aurora hunters and photographers are in their element. Longyearbyen becomes even more magical, lit by street lamps, moonshine, starlight and the colourful Aurora Borealis dancing in the heavens above. Seeing this fantastic display of light fills every person with wonder. It is no surprise the aurora have been the inspiration of Scandinavian myths for centuries

Wintertime sees Svalbard covered in a soft blanket of snow. The landscape is endlessly white and ideal for Arctic adventures. Start your engines and speed across the snow on a snowmobile excursion. Or take in the scenery during an exhilarating husky dog sled ride. Delve beneath Svalbard on an ice cave tour and discover a hidden world of ice formations, underground rivers, and glaciers.

By the end of February, the sun reappears over the horizon, its rays streaming across frosted mountain tops, stretching down into valleys below, and tinting the blue glow of the Polar Night with a pink hue. As the sun shines in the sky once again, the landscape sparkles as the snow melts into streams that lead to the sea. Add to this scenery the combination of sunrise and sunset for breathtakingly beautiful moments.
