Itinerary

The itinerary

Hurtigruten offers unique expedition cruises to some of the most remote and pristine waters of the world. As with all expeditions; nature prevails. Weather, ice and sea conditions set the final framework for all Hurtigruten’s operations. Safety and unparalleled guest experiences are at all times our top priorities. All our indicative itineraries are continuously evaluated for adaptions, whether this is due to constraints the elements unexpectedly present – or exciting possibilities nature and wildlife offer. That is why we call it an expedition.

Overview

New Year in the Far North

Join us on a very special winter and New Year’s cruise to the famous landmarks and hidden gems of Northern Norway.

On this Norwegian cruise you will explore a truly unique natural world. Northern Norway is wild, rugged and like nowhere else on Earth. The landscape is ceaselessly varied, unspoiled, magnificent, awe-inspiring, beautiful…you will run out of adjectives to describe this unforgettable place.

Arctic Magic

The weather in the Arctic might be crisp and clear, and It may also snow heavily at times. We work with the conditions and adapt our programmes as we go, with safety always first and foremost on this Norway holiday.

Wildlife and Northern Lights

Whales approach Norwegian shores this time of year to feed on herring, so we will keep a sharp eye out for them from deck.  We hope to experience the magical Northern Lights, with the short daylight hours of fantastic colours giving way to beautiful shades of evening blue as a search for the Aurora begins.

We will sail from Tromsø with MS Spitsbergen, visiting settlements and villages rich with fishing traditions, Sami history and polar expedition heritage. We will celebrate the New Year in Honningsvåg, the capital of the North Cape. We will make sure to enjoy the brief daylight and we are hoping for crisp and clear nights and days. As evening falls, all eyes will turn to the skies as we hunt for the unforgettable Northern Lights.

Day 1: Tromsø

Paris of the North

Embarkation

Tromsø brims with culture and history in a magnificent landscape.  The city is often described as the Paris of the North, and boasts friendly locals, wonderful shopping and great restaurants. Spend some time enjoying this Arctic town before embarking on your voyage with MS Spitsbergen.

Day 2: Lyngen Fjord

Spectacular Lyngen

Full day - Exploration day

This famed mountain range of Lyngen is known for dramatic peaks and steep mountainsides that plunge into the fjord. If conditions allow, we will spend the morning exploring here. We might visit the charming fishing village of Havnnes, where stock fish is produced in the traditional way.

Overnight

We spend the last day of 2020 in Honningsvåg with a range of optional activities. Visit the North Cape and stand on top of the plateau to sense being at the end of the world. In the evening, we will enjoy good company and delicious food as we celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Day 5: Hammerfest

New Year’s Day

Half day

We sail to Hammerfest, the northernmost town in the world.  The town will be quiet, and venues closed as this is New Year’s Day, but if conditions are good, we will enjoy walking through the seasonally decorated streets and find a vantage point overlooking the scenic Arctic town.
