Summer Cruise in Norway

Summer (May to August) is the most popular season to explore Norway’s coastline. Enjoy more of the Land of the Midnight Sun as you’ll have more daylight in which to explore the many highlights of coastal Norway above the Arctic Circle. During the summer months, we also make special seasonal sailings into beautiful Trollfjord, Geirangerfjord and Lyngenfjord.

Summer is an excellent time of year to discover Norway with Hurtigruten, and here's why:

  • Discover the breathtaking beauty of Trollfjord, Geirangerfjord (June-Aug) and Lyngenfjord (May)
  • Revel in Norway’s many summer celebrations like Norway Day, May 17
  • Experience the Midnight Sun, endless daylight and the extra energy it gives
  • See spectacular gushing waterfalls at their peak
Summer is the most popular time to visit Norway, and here you'll see just why...

The season of eternal sunshine

There is perpetual daylight along the entire coastline and endless days north of the Arctic Circle, thanks to the midnight sun. Many people say they get so much extra energy from the surplus light that they find it hard to go to bed. If you’re one of them, we offer an array of optional activities so you’ll never run out of things to do.

Staying active in Norwegian nature

Excursion options on your voyage include exhilarating boat rides, sea eagle safaris, sea and river kayaking, and hikes across mountain valleys, sandy beaches and lofty alpine peaks. Watch in awe as cascading waterfalls deliver winter’s snowmelt into the sea, right next to the blooming flowers of hillsides and valleys. See all excursions.

Season of celebration

Summer is also the high season for festivities. Join the fun and help Norwegians celebrate their Constitution Day, 17 May, when coastal communities become a kaleidoscope of colourful parades, music and tradition.

Sankthans, or Saint John’s Eve, 23 June, is another special Norwegian occasion observing both the birth of Saint John the Baptist and the summer solstice. Huge bonfires lit after the sun sets, or sinks low on the horizon, can be seen burning up and down the coast into the small hours of the morning.

  • Kayaking is just one of the many excursions we offer. Stay active and explore Norwegian nature with hikes, walks and boat tours.
  • Celebrating the 17th of May in Norway
  • Helgelandskysten, a hidden gem and highlight on the coastal cruise
  • Sailing through Risøyrenna in summer, on board MS Richard With
  • High speed RIB safari to Saltstraumen

Visit the fabled Norwegian fjords

Our summer schedule includes special sailings into incredible fjords:

  • During May, we detour into beautiful Lyngenfjord on southbound voyages
  • See spectacular Geirangerfjord (from June to August) on northbound journeys,
  • Visit enchanting Trollfjord from May to August on both northbound and southbound trips between Bergen and Kirkenes.

Celebrating local food

Hurtigruten’s creative cuisine is another thing to celebrate. Visiting 34 ports along Norway´s coast provides the perfect opportunity to source fresh produce from local suppliers every few hours, every day.

Fresh local food enhances the travel experience, generates positive ripple effects in the local communities and inspires great stories about the places we visit. Imagine sitting in the restaurant eating lamb as we sail past the meadows where the sheep had grazed. The story behind the food is part of the culinary experience.

Read more about the food on board.

Life along the coast

All summer long you’ll find tempting food fairs, flea markets, Viking festivals and world-class concerts and theatre events held in outdoor settings.

After so much activity, you may want to simply find a comfortable deck chair and bask under the midnight sun as we sail by Norway’s numerous natural wonders.

What to wear on a summer cruise in Norway

Summer weather along the coast can change at anytime, so in addition to shorts, t-shirts and sandals, it’s wise to pack a warm sweater, light jacket (water-resistant), thin hat and gloves, and hiking shoes.

Why not join us for an unforgettable summer adventure and sail along one of the most fabled coastlines in the world?
