From the dramatic volcanic wilds of Iceland, sail across the Denmark Strait to Greenland, the world’s largest island. Taking in the southern reaches of this culturally diverse land, we enjoy the magnificent splendor of its spectacular natural attractions and staggering wildlife, as well as the vibrant mix of native and colonial interaction on a voyage of true discovery before heading to Greenland’s best known part- the Disko Bay.

Voyage Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Reykjavik, Iceland and transfer to MS Fram.

Day 2
Visit the small Icelandic town of Grundarfjörður.

Day 3
At Sea. On board lectures covering the history and wildlife of the area.

Day 4
If conditions permit, we attempt a landing in the south-eastern part of Greenland.

Day 5
At Sea. On board lectures relating to Greenland.

Day 6
Visit the hot springs at Uunartoq.

Day 7
Visiting Qassiarsuk. Settlement walk and visits to Eric the Red’s longhouse and Tjodhilður’s church.

Day 8
Sail to Qaqortoq. Cultural visits to the town. Optional visit to the sculpture park. Hike to the Great Lake.

Day 9
Sail to Ivittuut. Mine walk and cruise in Karsakn Strait.

Day 10
Visit Nuuk, including cultural visits and optional hikes, whale watching and helicopter flights.

Day 11
At Sea. On board lectures relating to the area.

Day 12
Sail into Sisimiut. Tour and museum visit. Optional excursions available.

Day 13
Eqip Sermia Glacier. Shore visit and the possibility of hiking within view of the glacier.

Day 14
Sail to Ilulissat, the center of the Disko Bay. Optional excursions available.

Day 15
Arrive Kangerlussuaq. Transfer to airport for return flight.

Excursions - May

Igaliko – History Settlement walk
Igaliko is a settlement in the ancient sea of Gardar. You can visit the ruins of the diocese from the 12th century, covering an extensive area.

Qaqortoq - Town walk including church and museum
A guide will be at your disposal at different locations during the walk. On board you will receive a city map, which you can follow around the town. Visit the museum, which is situated in the oldest building in town from 1804 and view artefacts of the Inuit culture. You can also visit the old brewery, the old meeting hall and the Saviour’s church, which was constructed in 1832.

Qassiarsuk - Settlement walk, Erik the Reds longhouse, Thjodhildes church
Here you can join a guided walk through the settlement to learn more about the history of the region. Visit the reconstruction of Erik Raude’s longhouse and the church that Erik’s wife Tjodhildur made him build which is still in use today.

Narsaq - Settlement walk
A guide will be at your disposal at different locations during this walk. Tout also includes a visit to the museum.

Ivittuut - Old Mining walk
A guide will be available at different locations during the walk.

Nuuk - Tour by bus including museum and cathedral visit
Visit the capital of Greenland, the National Museum and the Institute of Nature. In the National Museum you can find among other things, the mummies found in Qilakitsoq (near Uummannaq) which are over 500 years old. You can also visit the beautiful ''Our Saviour’s Church'' that was built in 1849. 

Sisimiut - Kayak show
Before docking in Sisimiut see a kayak show, which demonstrate old hunting techniques alongside the ship.

Modern Greenland/Culture Town walk & Museum
A guide is available for you at different locations of the walk, and on board receive a city map to help guide you around. In the old part of the town with its beautiful buildings dating back to the 17th century, learn about the history of Sisimiut, and your guide can tell you stories about the town and the buildings. The Sisimiut Museum is a culture-historical local museum and its speciality is the Greenland trade, industry and shipping. The museum is housed in beautiful old buildings originating from the colonial period and it lies close to the harbour.

Eqip Sermia - BBQ
You are welcome to join a barbecue dinner with a terrific view over the glacier. There is also an option to join a short guided hike, or walk around on your own.

Ilulissat - Town walk
On board you will be given a map of the town and a guide will be available for you at different locations. On this cultural walk learn about Greenlandic history and the complexity of today’s society. You can also visit the church of Zion and the Knud Rasmussen museum.

Hike to Sermermiut
Enjoy a guided hike to the ancient settlement of Sermermiut, where Inuits have been living for thousands of years. The settlement is located approximately 1.5 kilometres south of the city at the estuary of the Icefjord. On the way to Sermermiut see Greenlandic dogs. In Sermermiut the guide will tell you about the sights and way of life before Europeans came to Greenland, and take you to see the Old Woman’s Cliff.

Evighedsfjorden - Polar Cirkel Boat cruising
Polar Cirkel cruise in breathtaking Evighedsfjorden. Our expedition team will guide you on a cruise along the glacier and tell you about the fantastic glaciers and moraines in this area. If the conditions are good, a landing and a short hike may be possible.

Kangerlussuaq - Bus tour to the Icecap
During a drive to the icecap there is a chance to see reindeer, musk oxen, Arctic foxes and a variety of birdlife. On arrival you have the opportunity to set foot onto the ice that covers 85% off the island and holds 10% of the planet’s fresh water reserves. The drive to the icecap is along a bumpy gravel road in a vehicle specially designed for this terrain and takes about one hour each way. (Animal sightings cannot be guaranteed).

BBQ - Nature
In the late afternoon you are welcome to join an outdoor lunch in the beautiful surroundings of Lake Ferguson.

Nanortalik
This tour will allow you to see the best of Nanortalik in your own time. There are many events taking place and a programme will be given to you on board. Enjoy folk dancing at the culture house, with dancers dressed in national costume. Listen to the Greenlandic Choir and watch a kayak show, demonstrating skills and techniques passed down through centuries.

 

Please note that September departure operates in reverse and is three days shorter as it does not include visits to Sisimiut, Eqip Sermia and Illulissat. This itinerary attempts a landing at Skjoldungen Island, where our Polar Cirkel boats take us to uninhabited mountainous coastline to enjoy without doubt some of the most breathtaking scenery anywhere in Greenland. Ringed seals are frequently seen in abundance here and the skies are often filled with fulmars, kittiwakes and gannets.
