Why sail on the Worlds Most Beautiful Voyage during Winter?

Experience the natural, unspoilt beauty of the Norwegian winter on a voyage along the remote and beautiful coast of Norway. The landscape is covered in white snow and the air is fresh, pure and crisp. Winter is a special time to explore Norway’s northern reaches, sail deep within the Arctic Circle in the warm and comfortable surroundings of a Hurtigruten ship.

Explore the Winter Arctic Scenery

Enjoy relaxing days, local cuisine, inspiring experts and the company of like-minded adventurers. Our voyages go beyond traditional cruising, taking you closer to the breathtaking environments, fascinating people and spectacular scenery of Arctic Norway’s coastline.

Some very special shore excursions will give you the opportunity to explore more of the Arctic scenery and culture or enjoy a more lively winter activity. Whatever you choose the spectacular winter scenery creates an authentic and stunning backdrop to the Arctic adventure of your dreams.

Those in the know will tell you that in winter the Norwegian landscape is bathed in beautiful shades of gold, pink and blue, as well as the illusive, dancing lights of the Aurora Borealis. And there is no better way to experience the Northern Lights than on a Hurtigruten voyage sailing through sheltered coastal waters free from artificial light.

On the shore clusters of houses glow like embers, small towns become cosy harbours in the night as you pull ashore to pick up new passengers. And the stunning backdrop of snow-clad mountains reflects the polar twilight to bathe us in eerie shades amid the shadows.

Hunting the Light

Join us to hunt for the wonderfully natural phenomenon of ‘Arctic light’. Sailing in the wake of Captain Richard With, the first to establish a regular coastal service you will cross the Arctic Circle and pass 71 degrees latitude north.

On your way you will get an insight into the culture and history of this remote part of the world and the different shades of Arctic light will be a major highlight of your winter journey. The sun is low on the horizon, and north of the Arctic Circle even below the horizon for some weeks.

This natural phenomenon produces a fascinating range of light from blue to purple and yellow tones, creating wonderful backdrops to the spectacular coastal landscapes. But the star of the light show is the Aurora Borealis.

You can never know when the Northern Lights will appear and disappear but sailing with Hurtigruten above the Arctic Circle will give you a good chance to experience the magic colour show from light green to dark purple flickering in the Arctic sky. Northern Norway is one of the best places in the world to watch the Aurora, as here there are more days with the Aurora than anywhere in the world!
