Stockholm, the Capital of Sweden

Stockholm is the beautiful capital of Sweden.

Drottningholm Palace

Drottningholm Palace was the first Swedish site to be placed on the World Heritage List. It was chosen because it is regarded as the best-preserved example of a 18th century palace in Sweden and is representative of all European royal architecture that used Versailles as its model.

Situated on an island in a small inlet of Lake Mälaren west of Stockholm, Drottningholm Palace has been the residence of Sweden's Royal Family since 1981.

En route to Drottningholm you may go through the southern districts of Stockholm and get a beautiful view of the skyline.

During your visit to Drottningholm you may visit the magnificently decorated State Apartments, and enjoy a stroll in the surroundings including the French and English style landscaped gardens.

Stockholm highlights

Don't miss the imposing City Hall. This magnificent fortress-like building from early 1900’is the impressive product of 12 years of toil by the combined skills of Swedish construction workers, sculptors, artists and craftsmen. It’s 105 meters high tower with three golden crowns and bells, played each day at midday, have become the symbols of the city.

The City Hall is also the venue of the yearly banquet December 10th following the presentation of the Nobel Prize.

Gamla Stan – the Old Town

During the tour you may enjoy a stroll through Gamla Stan – the Old Town. The historic elegance of the exterior of the imposing Royal Palace contrasts the narrow, twisting alleys and cobbled stone streets at the foot of the Palace walls. As you stroll around the small streets, it is easy to imagine that you are still in medieval times.

Vasa Museum

The island of Djurgården is Stockholm’s outdoor recreation center. While on the island you can visit the Swedish warship Vasa, which was, in that time, the world’s largest and the pride of mighty Sweden’s navy.

The present museum is built around the 17th century warship, which sank in Stockholm’s inner harbor on her maiden voyage in 1628. Raised from sea in 1961, and restored much of the original magnificence, today the Vasa is a fascinating authentic piece of living history.
