This comprehensive voyage offers us an unparalleled view of the scenic and cultural highlights of Greenland’s western coastline, from the magnificent Søndre Strømfjord to the remoteness of Qaanaaq, one of the northernmost settlements anywhere on Earth. Travelling in comfort aboard the uniquely appointed MS Fram, designed and built specifically for exploration in these northern regions, we traverse a landscape of breathtaking beauty and diversity, enjoying a series of lectures and cultural visits that will make this journey through one of the planet’s least visited regions all the more spectacular.

Voyage Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Kangerlussuaq and transfer by Polar Cirkel boats to MS Fram.

Day 2
Sail to Sisimiut. Tour and museum visit. Optional hiking and cultural workshops.

Day 3
Sail to Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island. Visit and hike in Blæsedalen.

Day 4
Sail to Uummannaq and visit town. Hike to ‘Santa’s Cabin’ and optional visit to the Grave of the Mummies and sail to the Red Desert.

Day 5
Sail to Kullorsuaq. Kaffemik and kayak show.

Day 6
Sail to Dundas and visit abandoned settlement.

Day 7
Sail to Siorapaluk. Cultural visits and lectures.

Day 8
Cruising along the ice edge.

Day 9
Sail to Qaanaaq (Thule). Cultural visits and nature hikes.

Day 10
At sea. On board lectures.

Day 11
Visit to Upernavik.

Day 12
Eqip Sermia Glacier. Shore visit and possibility of hiking with glacier views, followed by a barbeque.

Day 13
Sail to Ilulissat. Cultural visit and optional hike to the ancient settlement of Sermermiut. Opportunities for boat trip and helicopter ride over fjord.

Day 14 Sail to Evighedsfjorden and hike along the glacier.

Day 15 S
ail to Kangerlussuaq and disembark. Evening barbeque beside Lake Ferguson. Transfer to airport for flight to Copenhagen.

Day 16
Arrive in Copenhagen. Connect to return flight.

Excursions

Qeqertarsuaq – Historical and Cultural town walk
On board you will be given a map of the town and a guide will be available for you at different locations. You will pass through the old quarter from when Qeqertarsuaq was the ‘capital’ of Northern Greenland, to visit the octagonal church, called 'Our Lord's Little Ink Pot'. The tour continues further through town for a vivid impression of the ‘hunters’ society which is modern Qeqertarsuaq. Discover the history of the town with a visit to a museum.

Nature hike in Blæsedalen (The Valley of the Winds)
A walk over Rødeelv (the Red River) through Blæsedalen is the main highlight of this tour. Passing by the 900m high Skarvefjeld (Mountain of the Cormorant) you will walk through characteristic mountain heath to flora specific to Disko Island. The hike starts from the Women’s’ House (marked on the map) and ends at the waterfall.

Uummannaq - Town walk
On board you will be given a map of the town and a guide will be available for you at different locations of the walk. Uummannaq Church is located in the centre of the town with traditional turf huts nearby. The town museum displays replicas of the costumes of the famous Qilakitsoq mummies and collections of traditional arts and crafts. A special exhibition on the expedition of the German meteorologist Alfred Wegener is also on show.

Nature hike along the ‘heart shaped mountain’
Behind Uummannaq Santa Claus has found a location suitable for his needs. He uses this cabin when he has to build up his strength for the busy Christmas month - you can leave your Christmas wishes here.

You start at the harbour and continue through Uummannaq town to light hilly terrain. The last part of the hike is quite steep and those who wish may stay here and enjoy the view. During the hike you will sense how small the Island is and you may be surprised by the rich flora of this area. From the cabin you have a marvellous view of the Sea towards Nuussuaq Peninsula.

Knud Rasmussen’s old trading post
In Dundas you can go ashore and take a walk in the old settlement with the remains of Knud Rasmussen’s old trading post. You may also walk to the other side of the peninsula to see the remains of old turf huts from the former settlement.

Siorapaluk - Settlement walk
Explore a typical northern-Greenlandic hunter settlement - a unique place to send your postcards from. You can take a walk up the valley behind the village, with a chance to spot snow hares. After lunch, you can join a hike along the shore with breathtaking views of the mountains, fjords and ice. (Animal sightings cannot be guaranteed).

Qaanaaq (Thule) - Town walk including museum and church
A guide will be at your disposal at different locations during the walk. You can visit the Knud Rasmussen museum which is housed in the former home of this famous Arctic explorer. On your walk we recommend a visit to the local church where a choir will be singing for you and observe the figure of Jesus on the altar wearing socks! The locals decided that it is too cold to go barefoot and therefore painted the socks later on.

Hike to the mountain behind Thule
A guide will take you for a short hike behind the town to explore nature, which offers marvellous vistas of mountains, ice and flora.

Drum dance
Experience a drum-dance on board the vessel. This demonstrates some of the culture and traditions of this area of Greenland

Upernavik - Town walk and open air museum.
A guide will be at your disposal at different locations during the walk. Pass the buildings which are pver 200 years old, the school from 1911 and the turf house that now forms the world’s northernmost open-air museum.

Eqip Sermia - BBQ
You may join a barbecue dinner with a terrific view over the glacier. There is also an option to take a short guided hike, or walk around at your leisure.

Ilulissat - Town walk
On board you will be given a map of the town and a guide will be available for you at different locations. On this cultural walk learn about Greenlandic history and the complexity of today’s society. You can also visit the church of Zion and the Knud Rasmussen museum.

Hike to Sermermiut
Enjoy a guided hike to the ancient settlement of Sermermiut, where Inuits have been living for thousands of years. The settlement is located approximately 1.5 kilometres south of the city at the estuary of the Icefjord. On the way to Sermermiut see Greenlandic dogs. In Sermermiut the guide will tell you about the sights and the way of life before Europeans came to Greenland, and then take you to see the Old Woman’s Cliff.

Sisimiut -Kayak show
Before docking in Sisimiut there is an opportunity to see a traditional kayak show, which demonstrates old hunting techniques alongside the ship.

Modern Greenland/Culture Town walk & Museum
A guide is at your disposal at different locations of the walk and on board you will receive a city map to help guide you around. In the old part of the town with its beautiful buildings dating back to the 17th century, learn about the history of Sisimiut, and your guide can tell you stories about the town and buildings. The Sisimiut Museum is a culture-historical local museum and its speciality is the Greenland trade, industry and shipping. The museum is housed in beautiful old buildings originating from the colonial period and it lies close to the harbour.

Evighedsfjorden - Polar Cirkel Boat cruising
Polar Cirkel cruise in breathtaking Evighedsfjorden. Our expedition team will guide you on a cruise along the glacier and explain the fantastic glaciers and moraines in this area. If the conditions are good, a landing and a short hike may be possible.

Kangerlussuaq – Nature Bus tour to the Icecap
During our drive to the icecap there are chances to see reindeer, musk oxen, Arctic foxes and a variety of birdlife. On arrival you have the opportunity to set foot onto the ice that covers 85% off the island and holds 10% of the planet’s fresh water reserves. The drive to the icecap is along a bumpy gravel road in a vehicle specially designed for this terrain and takes about one hour each way. (Animal sightings cannot be guarantees
