Hurtigruten - Antarctic Voyages

Shackleton’s Antarctica

19 day voyage from £3528pp

Sailing south aboard MS Fram, in the giant footsteps of Ernest Shackleton, this exceptional adventure combines an in depth exploration of the White Continent with the equally remote landscapes of the Falklands and South Georgia.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Buenos Aires and transfer to hotel, free time to explore the historic ‘Paris of the South’. Tour the city’s eclectic mix of grandiose European architecture, perhaps visit the famous mausoleums of the Recoleta Cemetery, or take in a fabulous Tango show in the city that has become synonymous with this most intoxicating of dances.

Day 2
Fly to Ushuaia and transfer to MS Fram. Set sail for the Falkland Islands.

Day 3
At sea. Lectures on the natural and cultural history of the Falkland Islands, an archipelago of nearly 700 islands that occupies the South Atlantic waters 480 km from Cape Horn and some 1,600 km north of Antarctica.

Day 4 – 5
Explore Port Stanley, the capital of the islands and once a deepwater port that provided a vital haven for ships passing through the Magellan Straits. We will spend time discovering something of the unique Sub-Antarctic wilderness and fauna of the region.

Day 6 – 7
At sea, heading towards South Georgia. On board lectures against a stunning backdrop of glacial ice and emerald bays.

Day 8 – 9
Visit the wildlife colonies, whaling stations and historic sights of South Georgia, including hopefully the Gryviken Whaling Station, where Shackleton’s grave is located. We can expect to find large colonies of fur and elephant seals, king penguins and black-browed albatross amongst these remote landscapes.

Day 10
At Sea, on board lectures.

Day 11
South Orkneys. The Islands lie in the Scotia Sea about 600 km north-east of the Antarctic Peninsula and were discovered by American and British sealers in 1821. They have since served as a base for Scottish, French and Argentine sealing and scientific expeditions. We will cruise by the Washington Strait and Coronation Island before setting course towards Elephant Island and Antarctica where we expect to arrive on the morning of Day 12.

Day 12 – 16
The following days see us exploring in more depth these remarkable and remote vistas. Our landing sites in Antarctica vary from voyage to voyage and largely depend on the weather and ice conditions, but highlights will include the South Shetland Islands and isles along the Antarctic Peninsula. We will visit penguin colonies, explore spectacular ice formations and look out for whales, dolphins, seals and the dazzling variety of sea birds that call these waters home. Our intention is to visit locations including Deception Island, Port Lockroy, Cuverville Island, Arctowski base, Almirante Brown and the iceberg-lined Lemaire Channel, to get close to a breathtaking gallery of towering bergs as we weave our way through the icy seas. During our time here there will be regular land and boat excursions in our Polar Cirkel boats.

Day 16 – 17
Cross the infamous Drake Passage over the next 35 hours, passing Cape Horn en route to Ushuaia.

Day 18
Arrive in Ushuaia and explore Argentina’s most southerly city. Fly to Buenos Aires, overnight stay.

Day 19
Transfer to airport for international flight.

Note: Above itinerary is valid for the Christmas & New Year departure 20 December. The November and February departures are 20 day voyages, please refer to our dossier for details of the itinerary.
