Tale of Two Ice Lands

This is a voyage that takes you through the highlights of Disko Bay and on to the less visited southern regions of Greenland. En route you will visit traditional Inuit communities and historic Viking settlements, the thriving
Greenlandic capital of Nuuk, the impressive alpine landscapes of southern Greenland, before sailing across the Denmark Strait to the volcanic island of Iceland.

DAY 1 Kangerlussuaq

Fly from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq, our main gateway into Greenland. Consisting of less than 600 hardy souls, who live and work in this remote desert-like landscape, the settlement is situated close to the majestic inland ice sheet that covers more than 80% of the country.

DAY 2 Qeqertarsuaq

Situated on the volcanic island of Disko, Qeqertarsuaq is home to an Arctic research station that is part of a Copenhagen University study into flora and fauna. You can spend the time here strolling along the beach, enjoying the spectacle of towering icebergs that lie grounded on the shore, or you may like to join a highly recommended walking tour to Blæsedalen, a place rich in Arctic flora.

DAY 3 Ilulissat

Ilulissat means iceberg in Greenlandic and this is a town that certainly lives up to its name. Sermeq Kujalleq is the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere, feeding enormous icebergs into the ice fjord. Little wonder then that this stunning setting is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

DAY 4 Sisimiut

The second largest community in Greenland,Sisimiut’s bounty comes from the sea, with a modern fishing fl eet, a shipyard and a fish processing factory all contributing to the town’s prosperity. We recommend a visit to the local Arts and Crafts workshop close to the pier, where you can watch artisans create traditional jewellery and perhaps purchase a local souvenir or two.

DAY 5 Nuuk

The country’s capital and its oldest town, Nuuk was founded by the Norwegian missionary Hans Egede in 1728. Today it is a place where the old traditions and the new Greenland blend perfectly, from the picturesque old buildings of Kolonihaven, to the modern architecture of the country’s seat of government.

DAY 6-8 Southern Greenland

Your final routing through this region will be very much dependant on the weather and ice conditions. Some of our proposed landing sites are at Narsaq, an idyllic small town located in a huge complex of fjords and Ivittuut, an old mining village of approximately 200 summer residents. We hope to visit Qaqortoq, with its artistic stone sculptures and Hvalsey, where you can fi nd some of Greenland’s best preserved ruins dating back to the Norse period. We also aim to call into Qassiarsuk, renowned as the spot where the Viking Erik the Red built his settlement at Bratthalid.

DAY 9 Prince Christian Sound

Often filled with icebergs, this narrow 45 kilometres long sound is hemmed in by impressive granite rock cliffs on either side, offering a spectacular backdrop to your voyage today.

DAY 10 Denmark Strait

Crossing the Denmark Strait you retrace the steps of the great Norse settlers of old, who left the shores of Iceland and Norway more than 900 years ago in search of new lands and new beginnings.

DAY 11 Grundarfjordur

The Snaefellsnes Peninsula has been called “Iceland in a nutshell.” The diversity of its landscape, with its lava formations, glaciers and volcanoes, as well as the rich diversity of its bird life encompasses all that is bestin the country. Our destination for today is Grundarfjordur, a charming fishing village that lies on its northern coast.

DAY 12 Reykjavik

The world’s northernmost capital, Reykjavik is a vibrant modern city surrounded by incredible natural attractions. Cosmopolitan and stylish, the city is filled with restaurants, museums and shops.
