Stavanger, Norwegian Petroleum Museum and Stavanger City Tour (Afternoon)
-
Our tour starts with a walk through Gamle Stavanger, the old part of Stavanger and Europe’s best preserved wooden house settlement, consisting of more than 150 houses. The houses were built at the end of the 17th and early 18th century and are now protected by a special preservation law.
You will also visit the impressive Stavanger Cathedral. Built of stone in the 12th century, this cathedral was erected by Bishop Reinald from Winchester, England in 1125, after King Sigurd Jorsalfar (the Crusader) made Stavanger a cathedral town. This very well-preserved Middle Age Cathedral was originally erected in Anglo-Norman style, but after a fire in 1272, the vestibule was rebuilt in Gothic style.
From here, you will leave the city centre and drive to the outskirts of Stavanger making a short stop at Hafrsfjord, where a historical sea battle was fought in the age of the Vikings 1100 years ago. From Ullandhaug Tower you will get a bird’s-eye view over the city and the Ryfylke Fjord.
From here you will drive back to the city to visit the Norwegian Petroleum Museum. The unusual architecture has made the museum a landmark in the Port of Stavanger. Seen from the sea the museum looks like a small oil rig. At this museum you will be able to learn more about the technology and geology involved in oil production and experience the excitement and drama of life onboard an Oil Rig. Your visit ends with a fascinating movie presentation. Return to the ship afterwards.
Remarks: The tour involves substantial walking over cobblestone and uneven surfaces. Not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. Wheelchairs are not recommended.

Boat trip to the Lysefjord (Afternoon)

You cruise into the splendid Lysefjord, location of one of Norway’s spectacular wonders, Preikestolen – the Pulpit Rock over 1500 feet above the sea level and you will sail directly under it. While cruising in this beautiful fjord it is an interesting thought that in many places the water around us is as deep as the surrounding mountains are high. You make a stop at the idyllic beach at Helleren where coffee or tea and “Lysefjord Lapper” (pancake) are served. As you cruise back to Stavanger you have a nice view over the city, and you might get to see an oil rig under construction.

On our way to Mosterøy Island you drive through the “Rennfast” road system which is a prime example of Norwegian engineering at its finest. The highway passes through one of the world’s longest and deepest undersea car tunnels – the Byfjord tunnel. The tunnel is 5,860 meters long and descends 223 metres beneath the sea surface, 45 meters below the sea bed.
On the western tip of Mosterøy Island is Utstein Monastery. This was one of the royal estates of King Harold Fairhair around year 1000 AD. King Harold Fairhair was the first King to claim sovereignty over all of Norway. Utstein was also the residence for King Magnus Lawmender around the year 1200, and later taken over by the monks at the St. Olav monastery in Stavanger. They established it as an Augustinian monastery and carried on with the construction. From the middle of the 18th century, Utstein evolved into a Danish style manor.
