Weddell Sea Adventure (2012)

This expedition is named after Captain James Weddell. Reaching a latitude of 74° south, he had achieved something that no human had ever accomplished before. It was here too that Shackleton’s ship the Endurance became icebound in 1915, finally losing its fight with the encroaching pack ice and being crushed beyond repair, leaving the crew stranded on the ice. Experience some unforgettable encounters with huge tabular icebergs.

DAY 1 Buenos Aires

Arrive in Buenos Aires and stay overnight.

DAY 2 Ushuaia

Fly to Ushuaia on the Island of Tierra del Fuego where your voyage starts.

DAY 3-4 Drake Passage

Named after Sir Francis Drake, the Drake Passage is one of the world’s great seaways, connecting the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Infamous and legendary, it is steeped in the history and lore of exploration and discovery and, as our vessel comfortably negotiates our way south, there will be a chance to enjoy some informative and educational lectures en route.

DAY 5-11 Antarctica

Once we cross the Antarctic Convergence you will start to feel the air getting crisper and colder. Antarctic penguins will hunt and play around you and icebergs are an ever present feature of the landscape. Dedicated to scientific research and with no permanent inhabitants, Antarctica is home to millions of penguins and its seas provide sustenance to thousands of whales. Simple words cannot truly convey the feeling of being here, looking out upon the vast emptiness of the Great White Continent. The ice, wind and weather dictate life in Antarctica, as well as our route. Every voyage is unique and your experienced crew endeavour to make each one an experience of a lifetime. The final choice of landings will be made in the course of the voyage.

On this particular voyage we may also attempt landings at:

Snow Hill Island
Discovered by James Clark Ross in 1843, Snow Hill was named on account of the stark contrast it created against the barren rock of nearby Seymour Island. The Swedish explorer Otto Nordenskiöld spent the winters of 1901, 1902, and 1903 here, during which he discovered the largest penguin fossils ever found.

James Ross Island
Separated from the Antarctic Peninsula by the Prince Gustav Channel, James Ross Island is a large island lying off the peninsula’s southeastern edge, close to its northeastern extremity.

Vega Island
The Vega Island fossils show signs of the K-Pg extinction event some 65 million years ago, which wiped out all non-avian dinosaurs. The findings here have documented this event in better detail than most other places on Earth. From the ship’s deck you may also be able to observe the unique sight of Antarctica’s only waterfalls as they cascade down the dramatic cliff faces.
Trinity Peninsula/Prince Gustav Channel Trinity Peninsula makes up the extreme northeastern portion of the Antarctic Peninsula, extending north-eastward for about 130 kilometres. The Prince Gustav Channel was named in 1903 by Otto Nordenskiöld of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition, in honor of Crown Prince Gustav of Sweden.

DAY 12-13 Drake Passage

With our bow pointed north and an unforgettable collection of images and experiences safely stored in your memories, you head back towards the South American mainland with a new understanding of the Antarctic continent. From here your sturdy vessel, the MS Fram, safely steers a course back across the legendary waters of the Drake Passage.

DAY 14 Ushuaia

Journey’s end sees you back in the most southerly town on Earth, a fitting end to a spectacular voyage. Fly to Buenos Aires for an overnight stay in this bustling capital city.

DAY 15 Buenos Aires
