Shackleton’s Christmas Adventure (2010)

Following in the footsteps of Shackleton is an unforgettable experience at any time of year but spending Christmas and New Year in the White Continent is a very special experience.

19 Day Christmas/New Year Voyage

After visiting The Falkland Islands and South Georgia you head south to celebrate New Year in the awesome surroundings of Antarctica.



 

Day 1 Buenos Aires

Fly to Ushuaia from Buenos Aires and board the MS Fram.

Day 2 At sea

Whilst heading towards the Falkland Islands, lectures will
prepare you for the coming days.

Day 3–4 Falkland

Visit the remote farming communities of the Falkland
Islands, a unique Sub-Antarctic environment home to more than 70 animal and bird species including the King Penguin and Albatross.

Day 5-8 At Sea

Sail to South Georgia and enjoy lectures introducing
the sights ahead. Sail past magnificent mountain scenery and beaches teeming with wildlife. Fortuna Bay and abandoned whaling stations are on the itinerary as well as Grytviken with its whaling museum and the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton, the great Antarctic explorer. A deserving setting to spend Christmas.

Day 9 At sea

At sea, receive a briefing on the Antarctic visitor guidelines.

Day 10 South Orkney Island

Spend the day on South Orkney Island discovered by
American and British sealers in 1821. Sail the Washington Strait and past Coronation Island before heading towards Elephant Island and Antarctica.

Day 11–15 Antarctica

Arrive in Antarctica for spectacular sights and the
start of the New Year. Weather, wind, and ice conditions will determine your final itinerary and amongst the places likely to be visited are Paradise Harbour, Half Moon Island, Petermann Island and Port Lockroy, the home of the British Antarctic Survey.

Look out for whales, dolphins, penguin colonies, seals and an abundance of various seabird species in addition to spectacular ice formations. A visit to the breathtaking Lemaire Channel is also planned before setting course for the infamous Drake Passage.

Day 15–16 Drake Passage

Cross the Drake Passage and head north to Ushuaia.

Day 17 Ushuaia/Buenos Aires

Disembark the MS Fram in Ushuaia and fly to Buenos Aires where your journey ends.

Flight Package

Your flight package includes: Return economy class (usually overnight) flights from London Heathrow to Buenos Aires (via Madrid or similar), including applicable taxes and current fuel surcharges (except departure tax from South America which has to be paid locally), 1 night in Buenos Aires before and 1 night after the voyage including breakfast, transfers to/from Buenos Aires airport.

Not included: Departure tax from South America which has to be paid locally (details will be forwarded with your travel documents), optional carbon balancing fee. Departures & supplements from other UK airports are available on request.
