Trekking in Spitsbergen’s spectacular northwest regions
13 days 12 nights / Full board*
Leaving the ship, we spend several nights camping on land, hiking and taking part in the polar bear watch. One of the most striking landscapes on Earth, the Svalbard archipelago’s stark and formidable peaks, ice-bound fjords and magnificent wildlife makes it the ideal destination for an active adventure. Travelling northbound aboard the MS Nordstjernen, we follow the western coastline of Spitsbergen, up to Moffen Island, past an intricate network of bays, glaciers and coastal settlements, before jumping ship to explore these rich and beautiful regions more intimately on foot. We spend several nights in tents on the land, taking turns on the overnight polar bear watch, while others sleep. Note that these are active adventures and participants must be physically fit.
Adventurers on land
Beginning in Longyearbyen we have time to explore something of its historic and natural attractions before setting sail. Passing through the mining settlement of Barentsburg we head into the spectacular Icefjord and along the coast of Prins Karl’s Forland. Reaching the magnificent Monaco Glacier, Magdalenefjord and Woodfjord, enroute to Moffen Island, there is every chance that we will see whales and polar bears. Overhead the skies can become a swirling mass of guillemots and puffins, before we head to Ny-Ålesund, the most northerly, permanently inhabited settlement. The trekking sections of our itinerary take place on our return journey, before rejoining the ship to head back into Longyearbyen.
Spitsbergen Trekking
The world’s most northerly trek, amongst spectacular mountains and mighty glaciers of the frozen Arctic. Using two different base camps, we take day treks so we only need to carry a day pack. Raudfjord is the northernmost fjord on Spitsbergen, an area of towering jagged peaks that inspired the island’s name. We spend three days hiking here, before a brief return to the ship sees us transported to Ny-Ålesund. The second of our camps lies close to the imposing mass of the Blomstrand Glacier, where we enjoy more day hikes, taking in the mountains, glaciers and coastline of this remarkable region. All walks are guided and safety equipment is carried by guides throughout.
